About this game

Pong Duel is the oldest competitive video game idea, rebuilt for two people on one screen. Each player controls a paddle on their own side; the ball bounces, and every hit adds a little speed. Nobody wins a rally by defending — you win by placing the ball where your opponent’s paddle is not.

Ball control is the entire skill. Hitting with the centre of the paddle returns the ball straight; hitting with the top or bottom edge angles it away. Because the ball accelerates with every return, a long rally becomes a fight over two or three degrees of angle, and the player who can hold a steep angle without missing usually takes the point.

Scoring is to seven by default and every point is short. There is no timer and no power-up — the game is deliberately stripped back so that the only variable is who is reading the ball better.

It plays best on a tablet held between two people or a laptop with two keys each. On a phone it still works, but the paddles get small; the layout switches to a vertical field automatically on narrow screens.

How to play

  1. Aim with the edge of the paddle, not the middle — the centre only ever returns a straight ball.
  2. Hold a steep angle early in a rally; speed makes steep angles much harder to cover later.
  3. Anticipate the ball's bounce off the wall rather than reacting after it turns.
  4. On a fast rally, move before the ball crosses the halfway line, not as it arrives.
  5. If you are losing the angle battle, slow the rally by returning flat and reset the point.

Questions

How many players?

Two, sharing one screen. Each player controls the paddle on their own side.

What is the winning score?

Seven points by default, with no need to win by two.

Do the paddles get longer?

No, paddle size is fixed so the match never becomes a war of attrition.

Can I play solo?

This build is designed for two people, but one player can simply control both paddles to practise.
