About this game

Merge 2048 is the sliding-number puzzle that took over the internet, rebuilt for phones. Tiles slide as far as they can in the direction you swipe, and two tiles with the same number merge into one double-value tile. The board fills slowly, and the game ends when no moves remain.

The reason it is addictive is that the board state is entirely your fault. Random tiles only spawn a two or a four, so a board that ends up jammed is a board that was stacked badly twenty moves earlier. Good players keep one corner as an anchor: they pick the bottom-left, push everything toward it, and never move the anchor tile away unless forced.

Keeping the largest tile in a corner does two things. It stops big tiles from wandering into the middle where they block merges, and it preserves two long free lanes for building intermediate values. Most failed runs break because a 128 or 256 ended up in the centre of the board where it could no longer be paired.

There is no timer and no limit — the game runs until you run out of moves, which usually takes five to fifteen minutes. Your best score and top tile are stored on your device.

How to play

  1. Pick one corner as an anchor and funnel every merge toward it.
  2. Keep the biggest tile locked in that corner; never slide it out unless forced.
  3. Hold two long free lanes for building mid-value tiles.
  4. Swipe in only two directions most of the time — left and down is enough to reach 2048.
  5. Never swipe up-left-up-right randomly: every move should have a purpose.
